Model API.

Connect a hosted model with a saved key or your own compatible endpoint.

Verified for Gyro 0.1.0-alpha.49.7

Experimental: model API providers in this release run through the desktop app. Provider billing and model availability are separate from Gyro.

Use a preset

  1. Create a key with DeepSeek, Mistral, or OpenRouter through that provider’s account. Check its billing and usage limits.
  2. In Settings → Providers → Connect with an API key, choose the provider preset.
  3. Paste the key and select Save key. Gyro stores saved keys in macOS Keychain.

A matching API-key environment variable takes priority over a saved key. If Gyro uses an unexpected key, check the environment used to launch the app as well as the saved setting.

PresetBase URLEnvironment key
DeepSeekhttps://api.deepseek.com/v1DEEPSEEK_API_KEY
Mistralhttps://api.mistral.ai/v1MISTRAL_API_KEY
OpenRouterhttps://openrouter.ai/api/v1OPENROUTER_API_KEY

Add a custom endpoint

  1. Open Settings → Providers → Add custom provider. Enter a display name, base URL, API key, and one or more model IDs for a service compatible with the OpenAI chat-completions format.
  2. Use the base URL supplied by the service, including its API prefix. Gyro’s model fetch requests /models under that base URL. For example, a /v1 base requests /v1/models.
  3. Use Fetch models when the service supports it, or enter its documented model IDs. Save the provider and key.

Loopback API servers do not require an API key. Remote endpoints require HTTPS. Plain HTTP is accepted only for loopback addresses. URLs with embedded credentials and redirected requests are rejected; use the final endpoint URL.

Choose a model

  1. Return to your project session and select the configured provider and model from the chat picker.
  2. Run the first-task example. Check any tool approvals and the response.

Connected: your chosen model returns a response. A saved key alone does not confirm that the endpoint, billing, and model access are working.

The service receives your prompts and task context, which can include file contents and command output. Review its terms and charges. To remove a saved key, use the provider’s Remove control in Settings. Credential deletion details.

Connection errors

401 means the provider rejected the key. A connection error can mean the endpoint is unreachable. An empty model list can mean the base URL or API prefix is wrong, or model discovery is unavailable.
